Progress Report 4

Bad News :(

Sorry to break it to you guys, but my cilantro died!
I think it couldn't take the heat of the fog, so it just died.

All of the other plants are fine, but they haven't grown one inch since last week. I think that I need to add more fish fertilizer to the water.

I am planning on putting in some Sweet Mint, because it's very hardy and should withstand 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

Progress Report 3

My Plants Didn't Die!

Hey guys, just a quick update with photos and measurements. I decided to add an incandescent lamp to my plants, to help them grow.

I added a timer to my fog machine, because I realized that it was made to operate only 10 hours at a time. Every 10 hours or so, I turn it off for around an hour to help it rest. Hopefully this won't make the roots of my plants unhealthy.
I also decided to start measuring my plants:

Tomato 9" tall
Havasu Peppers 7" tall
Oregano 9" tall
Cilantro 7" tall
(Measured on March 22nd)

Progress Report 2

A post of celebration!

Hey guys, today I finally got my Fogponics Box up and running, plants included!
I decided to pick these plants for my project:

Havasu Peppers
Italian Oregano
Cilantro
Husky Cherry Red Tomatoes

All of these plants are edible.
Here are some neat pictures of my Fog Box:

Progress Report 1

Progress Report:

Hey guys! I have an update for y'all. So far, my Fog Box (That's what I'm calling my fogponics planter box for now) is almost complete. I am waiting for my Amazon order of Leca Clay Balls to arrive. They are going to be used to hold my plants' roots in place.
Here is a picture of them (they are the spheres in the black net cup):

Other than that, my Fog Box is completely finished. I was able to borrow a 3" hole saw to drill holes in the top of my 15 quart tub and put net cups in them. I will post pictures when I get home from my school.

The black strips you see on the lid are red LED lights. They are supposed to help my plants flower in the appropriate season.

I guess the only things that I need to do now is make my plant food, and buy some plants to grow.

Introduction

Introduction

Hey! I'm Josh, a Highschool Sophomore. I was asked to come up with a project to work on towards the end of the school year, and came up with this:

Is it possible for an average Joe to grow plants twice as fast in his or her kitchen? Is it possible to grow a variety of plants without spending too much money?

I came up with an idea for people that wanted to urbanly grow plants for their kitchen, whether it be plants for eating, or just some nice-looking flowers.

What if I was able to grow plants out of a planter box using Fogponics? I heard that it could grow plants faster, and that it uses less water than soil and hydroponics.

I decided to research fogponics more, and ended up making my own design on a Google drawing doc:

After that, I bought a 15 quart tub with a lid at Bed Bath & Beyond,  a generic fog machine on Amazon, Alaska Fish Fertilizer at Home Depot, and some 3" net cups.

I imagine that some people reading this blog might not know what Fogponics is. Fogponics is a way of growing plants; you can put plants in a tub full of fog, and the roots of the plants will absorb nutrients out of the fog, causing less water to be used and also causing the plants to grow faster. In this blog, I will give you guys updates on how my project is doing, and how to make a fogponics box of your own.
